Langston Hughes
HOMESICK BLUES

De railroad bridge's
A sad song in de air.
De railroad bridge's
A sad song in de air.
Ever time de trains pass
I wants to go somewhere.

I went down to de station.
Ma heart was in ma mouth.
Went down to de station.
Heart was in ma mouth.
Lookin' for a box car
To roll me to de South.

Homesick blues, Lawd,
'S a terrible thing to have.
Homesick blues is
A terrible thing to have.
To keep from cryin'
I opens ma mouth an' laughs.

Thank you so much! :)

I believe it is a poetry (well... Ebonics poetry)
And this is a very wise thing:

JABBERWOCKY
Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

One of my favourite English poem.

Mary Elizabeth Frye.

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Fascinating and... readable ;) unlike many other English poems.

And check this! ;) (this is the word I've found for "зацените")

I was only dreaming but I meant you in my dream
I was disbelieving the reality it seemed
If you ever need me you should know I really care
You can tell the wind and I'll be there

Gentle and so tender are the words that you imply
Words I can't abandon cause I know they never lie
If you ever need me you should know I really care
You can tell the wind and I'll be there

Making my day
Like there is no tomorrow
No time for tears of sorrow
I have the sky
I've had a longing for it,
That day that I would fly

You are my salvation, you will help me come along
You're the inspiration for the best of all my songs
If you really think that I must know how much you care
You can tell the wind and I'll be there

Making my day
Like there is no tomorrow
No time for tears of sorrow
I have the sky
I've had a longing for it,
That day that I would fly

I was only dreaming but I meant you in my dream
I was disbelieving the reality it seemed
If you want my loving that's how you really care
You can tell the wind and I'll be there

Making my day
Like there is no tomorrow
No time for tears of sorrow
I have the sky
I've had a longing for it,
That day that I would fly

Have you recognised what it is? :)

Nope, it does not ring a bell.

Another modern English poem
Wendy Cope

Bloody men are like bloody buses -
You wait for about a year
And as soon as one approaches your stop
Two or three others appear.

You look at them flashing their indicators,
Offering you a ride.
You're trying to read the destinations,
You haven't much time to decide.

If you make a mistake, there is no turning back.
Jump off, and you'll stand there and gaze
While the cars and the taxis and lorries go by
And the minutes, the hours, the days.

And- check it out! (a more accurate expression for "зацените")

The translation is too good to be mine :) I don't know whose it is. If somebody tells me how to attach an mp-3 file here, you could listen to Havtan singing it :) By the way, I wasn't able to find it anywhere else in the Internet.

It's wonderful! ;)

Paul Anka (sung by Frank Sinatra):

And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain.
My friends, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full -
I've travelled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets? I've had a few,
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course -
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew,
When I bit off more than I could chew,
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried,
I've had my fill - my share of losing.
But now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that,
And may I say, not in a shy way -
Oh no. Oh no, not me.
I did it my way.

For what is a man? What has he got?
If not himself - Then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way.

Yes, it was my way.

вот такое вот музыкальное настроение

ON THE ROAD TO MANDALAY
by
Rudyard Kipling

By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' lazy at the sea
There's a Burma girl a-settin', and I know she thinks of me
For the wind is in the palm-trees, and the temple-bells they say
"Come you back, you British Soldier, come you back to Mandalay."
Come you back to Mandalay, where the old Flotilla lay
Can't you 'ear their paddles chunkin' from Rangoon to Mandalay
On the road to Mandalay, where the flying-fishes play
An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay.

'Er petticoat was yaller an' 'er little cap was green
An' 'er name was Supi-yaw-lat-jes' the same as Theebaw's Queen
An' I seed her first a-smokin' of a whackin' white cheroot
An' a-wastin' Christian kisses on an' 'eathen idol's foot
Bloomin' idol made of mud - what they called the Great Gawd Budd
Plucky lot she cared for idols when I kissed 'er where she stud
On the road to Mandalay.......

When the mist was on the rice-fields an' the sun was droppin' slow
She'd git 'er little banjo an' she'd sing 'Kulla-lo-lo'
With 'er arm upon my shoulder an' 'er cheek agin my cheek
We useter watch the steamers an' the hathis pilin' teaks
Elephants a-pilin' teak in the sludgy, squdgy creak
Where the silance 'ung that 'eavy you was 'arf afraid to speak
On the road to Mandalay........

But that's all shove be'ind me - long ago an' far away
An' there ain't no buses runnin' from the Bank to Mandalay
An' I'm learnin' 'ere in London what the ten-year soldier tells
"If you've 'eard the East a-callin', you won't never 'eed naught else."
No! you won't 'eed nothin' else, but them spicey garlic smells
An' the sunshine an' the palm-trees an' the tinkly temple-bells
On the road to Mandalay.......

I am sick o' wastin' leather on these gritty pavin' stones
An' the blasted English drizzle wakes the fever in my bones
Tho' I walks with fifty 'ouesmaids outer Chelsea to the Strand
An' they talks a lot o' lovin', but wot do they understand?
Beefy face an' grubby 'and - law! wot do they understand?
I've a neater, sweeter maiden in a cleaner, greener land
On the road to Mandalay......

Ship me somewhere East of Suez, where the best is like the worst
Where there aren't no Ten Commandments an' a man can raise a thirst
For the temple-bells are callin', an' it's there that I would be
By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' lazy at the sea
On the road to Mandalay, where the old Flotilla lay
With our sick beneath the awnings when we went to Mandalay
O the road to Mandalay, where the flyin'-fishes play
An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay.

:)

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

And one more ;)

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.--Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Может быть, это всем известно, но я только сейчас узнала, что это, оказывается, Бёрнс! :) :)

My heart is sair, I dare na tell,
My heart is sair for Somebody;
I could wake a winter night
For the sake o' Somebody.
Oh-hon! for Somebody!
Oh-hey! for Somebody!
I could range the world around,
For the sake o' Somebody!

Ye Powers that smile on virtuous love,
O, sweetly smile on Somebody!
Frae ilka danger keep him free,
And send me safe my Somebody.
Oh-hon! for Somebody!
Oh-hey! for Somebody!
I wad do - what wad I not?
For the sake o' Somebody!

May I?

Tiger! Tiger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the Fire?

And what shoulder, and what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tiger! Tiger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

вот такую я любопытную статью о переводах нашла:
http://www.vladivostok.com/speaking_in_ ... hmalko.htm
